Alix’s story – Robert Gordon University

2024 graduate Alix shares how Clearing allowed her to join RGU, her university of choice, after she didn’t get the grades she needed to have her first offer accepted. She tells us more about the Clearing process and how she has been supported at RGU.

What is Clearing?

UCAS Clearing is a second chance for students to get a place at university. You can use Clearing if you did not get any offers when you first applied due to exam results or if you changed your mind about what or where you want to study.

In total, 67,990 students have found a place using Clearing! After applying to RGU through Clearing, I was allowed to study at RGU for 4 years.

Why did I apply through Clearing?

I applied through Clearing as I did not receive any offers when I first applied to RGU due to not having suitable exam results from school. Still, fortunately, with Clearing, the process was straightforward, and everything was put in place for me within a week so I was ready to start studying for my Applied Social Sciences degree.

The RGU staff who dealt with my Clearing were extremely helpful and made me feel at ease as I was already finding it stressful knowing I may not have the opportunity to study at RGU, but the staff were great and very understanding!

Thinking about applying through Clearing? Think no more!

One piece of advice I would give to anyone thinking about going through the Clearing process is to go for it, you will never know unless you try. At the start, it can be overwhelming and scary not knowing what route to take but the staff at RGU are incredible and are there to support new and current students. Without going through the Clearing process, I never would have had the opportunity to study at RGU!

Why did I choose RGU?

Robert Gordon University was always my first choice, I never had any other university in mind as my friends always told me that it is a great place to study and the staff and people that go there are friendly. I knew that the staff made their students their priority, whether that came to personal issues or extra support with exams or anything else in general.

When I did not get suitable grades, it felt like I had the world on my shoulders as I planned to go to RGU and hopefully manage to study for four years to get my degree. After hearing about Clearing on the RGU website, I felt a sense of relief knowing I could have a second chance and that RGU would hopefully consider my application.

After going through the Clearing process, I have had the best four years studying at RGU. I have met so many amazing people and have made best friends with some of the students who were in my class. I cannot thank the staff at RGU enough for all the support they have given me during my time at here, especially when it came to my health and other personal issues.

There are some people who think university lecturers leave you to it when it comes to assessment and exam time but that is not the case at all. The lecturers at RGU always want the best for their students and will always go that extra mile to ensure their students have the correct guidance and support in place to get the most out of their university experience.

I also joined RGU Women’s Football team as well and again, made lots of new friends and was able to come out of my comfort zone and was allowed to attend Blues Ball so I highly recommend anyone joining RGU to join a sports club as meeting new people is great!

Through the opportunity of Clearing, I finished my course in May 2024. Here’s to Graduating in July! Thank you for taking the time to read this blog and remember, anything is possible if you put your mind to it.
